Unit Name: Dermatology II

Description: Dermatology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of dermatologic diseases. It also involves undertaking procedural of uncomplicated surgical excisions and other appropriate dermatologic procedures including, but not limited to cryotherapy and curettage. DMT820 is the first year of the Master of Medicine in Dermatology programme and developed to address the need for Specialist Dermatologists in the Pacific. It utilizes the prior knowledge and skills attained during the study of the Postgraduate Diploma in Dermatology (DMT801) to enable the candidate to function as a trainee Specialist dermatologist.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Develop an understanding of normal and abnormal anatomy, physiology, microbiology and immunology of mucosal and keratinized epithelium in common skin diseases. 2. Formulate provisional diagnoses/problem list through analysis of information obtained from comprehensive history and thorough examination. 3. Plan relevant investigations and/or procedures to assist in confirmation of diagnoses of skin diseases. 4. Analyze results of investigative tools including histopathology of skin. 5. Formulate appropriate management plans in the acute and long-term setting in children and adults with dermatologic conditions considering the fiscal constraints encountered in the Pacific. 6. Apply knowledge of pharmacology of medications used in the practice of dermatology to ensure evidence-based prescribing. 7. Demonstrate competency in undertaking dermatologic procedures including simple skin biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy and intralesional therapies following ethical protocols and managing their complications as a junior trainee. 8. Design safe and ethical practice protocols analyzing the diverse needs of patients considering their beliefs, traditions, gender and sexual orientation. 9. Integrate appropriate dermatological education and care at all levels of health services including developing the principles of apprenticeship learning for junior colleagues 10. Generate knowledge using scientific method and research to ensure best practice and ongoing self-learning in Dermatology. Distinguish the epidemiological and national health priorities in the Pacific, while assuming leadership roles in healthcare system in which they are working.
