Unit Name: Maritime Law and Pollution Prevention

Description: This course DME559 Maritime Law and Pollution Prevention, in this the course of study, the students learn about ways a ship can pollute the ocean and the environment, the laws that govern ships and shipping companies regarding pollution and the ways that ships are operated and equipped to prevent pollution. The United Nations (UN) Law of the sea is part of the study is discussed and as guidelines for sea boundaries and limits to jurisdictions.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit DME559, the student is expected to: • Understand Maritime Law and its application to seafarers • Describe Law of the Sea convention and its relevance to shipping • Demonstrate knowledge of the IMO convention dealing Seafarers training and education • Apply IMO conventions dealing with the safety of ships and marine pollution • Determine the relevance e local maritime legislations to seafarers and shipping • Interpret Quality Management as applicable to seafarers onboard a ship
