Unit Name: Marine Engineering Knowledge Motor II

Description: Engineering Knowledge Motor (EKM)is considered one of the core subjects for Marine Engineers. The student learns in-depth, details about prime movers that propel a ship at an operational level. The content of this course follows the recommendation and guidelines of IMO Model course 7.04 (Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch) 2014 Edition.DME 457 is the first part of the EKG delivered at level 4 in line with requirements for the University Diploma. The course is designed for a student who wishes to obtain the Diploma in Marine Engineering award by the Fiji National University (FNU) and or obtains the Class 3 Watchkeeper Certificate of Competency (COC) from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit DME556, the student is expected to: • Determine the principles of heat engines and how they are applied to two-stroke cycles. • Demonstrate various types of fuels their composition and how they are used onboard. • Illustrate the types of engines used as prime movers in marine machinery. • Sketch components of large-bore two-stroke engines and medium-speed engines. • Interpret engine systems and engine operation. • Apply Knowledge to practical applications using the Marine Engine Simulator
