Unit Name: Marine Engineering Knowledge General II

Description: Engineering Knowledge General (EKG) is considered one of the core subjects for Marine Engineers. The student learns in-depth, details abut auxiliary machinery found in a ship at operational level The content of this course follows the recommendation and guidelines of IMO Model course 7.04 (Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch) 2014 Edition. DME 556 is the second part of the EKG delivered at level 5 in line with requirements for the University Diploma. The course is designed for a student who wishes to obtain the Diploma in Marine Engineering award by the Fiji National University (FNU) and or obtains the Class 3 Watch Keeper Certificate of Competency (COC) from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit DME555, the student is expected to: • Demonstrates principles to be observed in an engineering watch at sea in a safe manner • Determine how vibration effect marine auxiliary machinery • Operate pumps and pumping systems • Sketch and describe machinery components • Diagnose and rectify faults related to marine auxiliary machinery • Understand basic construction of marine auxiliary machinery
