Unit Name: Marine Electrical Knowledge1

Description: Marine Electrical Knowledge is considered one of the core subjects for Marine Engineers. The student learns in-depth, details about electricity and the machinery that is powered by electricity at an operational level. The content of this course follows the recommendation and guidelines of IMO Model course 7.04 (Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch) 2014 Edition.DME 458 is the first part of the ELECTRICAL course and is delivered at level 4 in line with requirements for the University Diploma. The course is designed for a student who wishes to obtain the Diploma in Marine Engineering award by the Fiji National University (FNU) and or obtains the Class 3 Watchkeeper Certificate of Competency (COC) from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit DME453, the student is expected to: • Demonstrate theory of electricity and magnetism • Determine use of electricity applied to marine machinery • Specify with calculations how OHM\'s law as applied to simple electric circuits • Apply work power and energy with serial and parallel circuits • Interpret methods of electrical measuring and fault finding using volt, amp and mega ohm meters. • Apply Knowledge to practical applications using the Marine Engine Simulator
