Unit Name: Computer Application and Electronics

Description: In DME449, students are taught in a practical environment in the use of computers. Beginning with basics, the course is designed so that students can be competent in using computers on board ships to communicate internally and externally as well as use computers in daily activities.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit DME449, the student is expected to: • Describe basic concepts of hardware, software and Information Technology (IT) • Distinguish between mainframe computer, minicomputer, network computer, personal computer, and laptop computer in terms of capacity, speed, cost, and typical users. • Specify the terms, intelligent and dumb terminal. • Interpret Local and Wide Area networks and learn to use the Internet effectively • Relate to computer security and copyright laws • Demonstrate knowledge of electronics utilization in modern computers
