Unit Name: Basic Marine Engineering Knowledge

Description: This course is designed to introduce 1st year Marine Engineering students to marine machinery used onboard ships. The content is designed so that theoretical knowledge supported by relevant practical sessions. The course covers introductory knowledge of the core subjects in Marine Engineering, Marine Engineering Knowledge, General Marine Engineering Knowledge, Motor Marine Electrical and Control systems.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit DME447, the student is expected to: • Illustrate the layout of the engine room and identify machinery • Understand the functions of marine auxiliary and electrical equipment and diesel engines • Discuss marine pollution • Demonstrate operations of marine auxiliary and electrical machinery • Demonstrate operation of marine diesel engines • Apply safe working practices in the engine room
