Unit Code: DAU603

Unit Name: Alternative Propulsion & Pollution Control Technology

Description: The unit provides scientific background for students in the subjects of energy and terminology, types and synthesis of alternative fuels for internal combustion engines. Students learn the definition and types of energy, alternative fuel types used in internal combustion engines, alternative fuel production, the use of these engines and alternative fuels. This course also provides basics of emission measurement and new engine technology.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the learner can: 1. Rate and contrast the environmental impact and economic role of both traditional and alternative energy supplies. 2. Emphasize renewable energy-related problems with knowledge in fossil fuels and alternative fuels. 3. Demonstrate knowledge in production methods of different alternative fuels. 4. Examine and select from different alternative fuels available for specific potential applications. 5. Analyze and understand the socio-economic, environmental impacts, limitations and applications of alternative fuels. 6. Apply knowledge of fuel thermochemistry and fuel quality effects on emissions, engine technologies and control technologies.
