Unit Code: CSC722

Unit Name: Data Communications and Networking

Description: Data Communications & Networking is a subject that studies the principals and practice of data communication and computer networking. This course has been designed for final year students who are interested in digital environment of communications and the management necessary to control it. Students will be able to study the structure and components of computer networks using the OSI layered architecture of networks as an organization principle. It covers all the concepts necessary for a complete understanding of the design of practical telecommunication networks, whether they are meant to carry voice, data, facsimile, telemetry, video, or any combination of these. Students will also be able to understand the principles of IP addressing and its assignment within networks.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Analyze the basis of the underlying technology of communication 2. Demonstrate the structure of the network including the devices and media that are necessary for successful communication. 3. Carry out various data transmission & data signalling scheme 4. Apply the basic application layer functionality and protocols. 5. Demonstrate the role of the transport layer and network layer functionality. 6. Carry out IP addressing structure and basic and VLSM subnetting in setting up a Local Area Network.
