Unit Name: Professional Practice

Description: This course is provided to give students a sense of actual medical laboratory work in the hospital laboratory. During this time, students will be attached in core laboratories – Haematology, Blood Bank/Transfusion, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Serology performing routine testing procedures. They will also spend time at the reception and phlebotomy section where they will learn to be competent in collecting blood samples from patients. Weekly workshops will be conducted to engage students in theory content and case scenarios in the clinical setting. Students will maintain a daily log book to record work achieved during their attachment and this will be signed off by the bench supervisors.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate competency in sample receiving, transport, and handling during pre-analytical stages, with clear communication among healthcare professionals. 2. Demonstrate proficiency in performing laboratory techniques ethically. 3. Apply knowledge of laboratory quality management systems in medical laboratory. 4. Perform venepuncture, donor recruitment and bleeding competently.
