Unit Name: Professional Practice

Description: This course is provided to give students a sense of actual medical laboratory work in the hospital laboratory. During this time students will be attached in core laboratories – Haematology, Blood Bank/Transfusion, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Serology performing routine testing procedures. They will also spend time at the reception and phlebotomy section where they will learn to be competent in collecting blood samples from patients. Students will maintain a daily log book to record work achieved during their attachment.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Demonstrate competency basic haematological sample testing, understand processes in the haematology laboratory, ethical considerations and communicate effectively with other laboratory personnel and health care professionals. 2. Demonstrate competency in basic sample testing in Blood Bank and Transfusion, understand processes in this laboratory, ethical considerations and communicate effectively with other laboratory personnel and health care professionals 3. Demonstrate competency in basic microbiological sample testing, discuss processes in the microbiology laboratory ethical considerations and communicate effectively with other laboratory personnel and health care professionals 4. Demonstrate competency in clinical biochemistry sample testing, explain processes in the biochemistry laboratory ethical considerations and communicate effectively with other laboratory personnel and health care professionals 5. Demonstrate competency in basic serological sample testing, explain processes in the serology laboratory ethical considerations and communicate effectively with other laboratory and medical personnel and health care professionals 6. Demonstrate competency in venepunctures; donor recruitment and bleeding, ethical considerations; and communicate professionally with patients and other laboratory personnel and health care professionals 7. Demonstrate competency in receiving appropriate laboratory samples, transportation of samples to relevant laboratories, ethical considerations and communicate effectively with other laboratory personnel and health care professionals
