Unit Name: General Microbiology

Description: This course is designed to provide students with knowledge pertaining to general bacteriology, parasitology, virology ,mycology and clinical & medical microbiology and its application in diagnosis of infectious diseases. The general emphasis is on the distribution, morphology and physiology of microorganisms with skills and techniques. These include aseptic procedures, isolation and identification of microorganisms, quality control and overlapping areas on immunology and epidemiology.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Outline the classification of microorganisms, microbial physiology and microbial cultivation methods. 2. Describe the morphology and biochemical characteristics of the bacteria. 3. Discuss the general characteristics of a Gram positive bacteria. 4. Discuss the general characteristics of a Gram negative bacteria. 5. Identify Acid Fast bacilli using Ziehl Neelsen Staining method. 6. Explain the classification and characteristics of parasites. 7. Describe the classification, general properties and diseases caused by viruses. 8. Identify the basic characteristics of medically important fungi. 9. Apply IATA regulations in collection, storage and transportation of microbiological specimens. 10. Practice urinalysis and identify common pathogens causing urinary tract infections. 11. Perform stool microscopy and identify common parasites and bacteria that causes gastrointestinal infections. 12. Discuss the microorganisms that are encountered in the meninges. 13. Define nosocomial infections and explain the mode of transmission in health care. 14. Discuss quality control methods used in Microbiology Laboratory and principles of immunology; and ethical considerations in microbiology

Prerequisite: Pass in Year 13 examination (or equivalent) and as per Minimum Entry Requirement (MER).
