Unit Name: Ethical and Legal Issues

Description: This course is designed to provide students with essential principles of ethical and moral conduct relating to phlebotomy practice. The health care professionals set standards of conduct for members, and members are expected to adhere to those standards to perform their work. The phlebotomy profession relies on the knowledge, skills, honesty and integrity in health care service delivery.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Describe the ethical and legal Policies and Acts associated with Phlebotomy. 2. Define customer care and identify methods in providing high quality healthcare customer service. 3. Apply methods for effective verbal and non-verbal communication strategies required for a phlebotomist to carry out laboratory duties. 4. Demonstrate a professional demeanour and work independently as a member of a health care team. 5. Classify the clinical analysis areas of a clinical laboratory and identify the types of tests performed in each laboratory department. 6. Discuss planning, development and implementation process of standard operating procedures in a Phlebotomy department. 7. Use Laboratory Information Systems and discuss importance of correct documentation of patient information. 8. List the basic tool used in quality control and assurance in phlebotomy practice. 9. Practice proper handling, packaging and transportation of laboratory specimen.

Prerequisite: Pass in Year 13 examination (or equivalent) and as per Minimum Entry Requirement (MER).
