Unit Name: Advanced Databases

Description: This course intends to give students an understanding of the fundamental issues in distributed database systems. The course content is distributed into two folds: First, in-depth study of the classical distributed database management issues such as distribution design, distributed query processing and optimization, and distributed transaction management. The second fold is to study more current distributed database management topics such as pervasive computing, web data management, different distribution models (push versus pull), interoperability and componentization. The course will be taught through lectures, supplemented with reading. The primary reading will be from the text book, with supplementary material from current research literature where appropriate. The written assignments and class tests are also a significant component of the learning experience.
