Unit Name: Operating Systems

Description: This course offers students an understanding of a typical internal structure of a multi-user system and sufficient experience with the use of both single and multi-user operating system to effectively manage their operating environment.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to understand the following: 1. Identify popular operating systems and familiarize themselves with terminologies related to operating systems. 2. Understand the management of hardware that falls under the jurisdiction of Operating Systems. 3. Discuss different types of file systems for various operating systems. 4. Perform, upgrade and customize any operating system installation. 5. Understand the role of device drivers and how it bridges the communication from physical media with the operating systems. The student shall also be able to understand how operating systems manage storage on physical media. 6. Understand the concept of network connectivity and perform installation and troubleshooting on network-related components on the operating systems. 7. Perform system maintenance operations on any system to increase its performance or recover from failure.
