Unit Name: Information Systems in Organization

Description: This unit offers students an understanding of the value and uses of information technology and management information systems. It provides tools needed for mastery of information systems concepts and terms that are important in managing information. The information era in which we live in today requires students to be equipped with an understanding of the ways in which they can effectively utilize information technologies in their workplace.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to do the following: 1. Define management information system, assess the state of competition using Porter’s five forces model, and identify important business processes. 2. Identify and discuss major business initiatives to gain a competitive advantage using IT. 3. Use databases to build business intelligence. 4. Identify and discuss different decision support systems and artificial intelligence as the brainpower for your business. 5. Identify and discuss strategies for the new economy. 6. Describe phases in the systems development life cycle. 7. Discuss building and sustaining the dynamic enterprise. 8. Identify threats and describe safeguards to protect people and information. 9. Discuss emerging trends and technologies in the future.

Prerequisite: The student must have passed CIN501 or equivalent.
