Unit Code: CHM801

Unit Name: Research Methods in Chemistry

Description: This unit imparts core knowledge in chemistry research. Besides introducing research ethics and opportunity, it imparts training in the systematic investigation through proper planning and implementation. Students will develop skills in identifying a research problem, experiment design, literature search, data collection, data treatment, and interpretation and reporting of experiment outcomes. The unit allows students to design and perform preliminary research in Chemistry. They will have hands-on experience in identifying a research problem, formulating research questions, conducting surveys of research literature, experiment design, data collection and interpreting research results under the supervision of qualified research supervisors. In addition, the students are trained in the project and report writing skills. All activities and the final project reports shall be evaluated and graded.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: a) Demonstrate the ability to read and evaluate published scientific literature, identify critical information, and analyze the given data. b) Demonstrate the ability to design research projects. c) Identify, adapt and apply appropriate techniques to answer research questions. d) Recognize the significance, limitations and assumptions in the data generated. e) Deduce logical conclusions and communicate results effectively. f) Present seminars. g) Demonstrate ability to write proper research proposals. h) Be familiar with ethics and norms in scientific research.
