Unit Code: CHM506

Unit Name: Biochemistry

Description: Biochemistry unit is an extension of Organic Chemistry (CHM 504) concepts with special emphasis to study of structure and functions of molecules to biological systems; their biosynthesis and their metabolic pathways. Topics covered include lipids, steroids, carbohydrates, amino-acids and proteins, nucleic acids, and enzymes. Students will acquire a knowledge of the underlying chemistry of biological processes that sustain life, such as transport and metabolism, as well as the functional roles of bio molecules. Concepts learnt will be useful in proper appreciation of subsequent courses in areas of Food Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Physiology and Pharmacology.
