Unit Code: CHM402

Unit Name: Foundation Chemistry I

Description: The purpose of this unit is to provide basic concepts in chemistry, needed by those who will continue to study chemistry at the tertiary level. This unit is concerned with further broadening knowledge of the specified major patterns of chemical behaviour and understanding these patterns according to various chemical principles. In the delivery of this unit, emphasis will be placed on the conduct of practical experiments and demonstration of safe and accurate use of apparatus and chemicals, developing skills in using scientific methods of solving problems, understanding of common chemical principles and their application to a range of everyday situation and technology.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Perform measurements in the laboratory with appropriate measuring devices, and report results incorporating uncertainties. 2. Perform simple calculations relevant to atomic structure and various periodic & group trends of the elements in the periodic table. 3. Discuss and explain the types of bonding and its effects on the physical and chemical properties of substances. 4. Apply the kinetic molecular theory of the various states of matter to explain the forces that affect their physical properties. 5. Perform calculations and solve problems by applying laws governing the behaviour of gases.
