Unit Code: CHM301

Unit Name: Preliminary Chemistry I

Description: The course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding and appreciation of the central role chemistry plays in all sciences and society. The central focus is to make chemistry interesting and understandable to learners through real-world examples of \"Chemistry in action\". It introduces basic atomic theory concepts, periodicity, chemical bonding, nomenclature and properties of elements and their compounds. Besides, this course also teaches essential stoichiometry associated with a systematic approach rather than simple memorization. It is intended for students who have never taken a chemistry course or have had a significant interruption in their studies but plan to continue with the general chemistry sequence.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to understand the following: 1. Use significant figures and uncertainties in calculations. 2. Identify the different parts of an atom. 3. Explain the arrangement of elements in the periodic table and the trends they follow in terms of their properties. 4. Determine how atoms combine to form compounds and molecules. 5. Name compounds, write chemical formulae, balance chemical equations & determine the reactions taking place between compounds. 6. Understand the mathematics involved in chemical reactions.
