Unit Code: BMT442

Unit Name: Introduction to Human Biology & Infection Control

Description: The purpose of this unit is to provide an introduction to human anatomy and physiology to non-medical students in Biomedical Engineering. Anatomy is the study of structures and their interrelationships. Physiology is the study of functions of various structures in our body. The content in the course describes the important body systems, and how they function together to maintain proper body functioning. Overall, the unit shall describe the structure and function of body systems that are most commonly associated with Biomedical Engineering. Moreover, this course will also describe the mechanisms involved in the transmission of pathogenic organisms, including prevention and control strategies in order to reduce the spread of infection in the healthcare setting.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Discuss the general anatomy and physiology of cells and basic body tissues. 2. Explain the principal structural features and functions of each component organ of the circulatory system. 3. Describe the principal structural features and functions of the respiratory system. 4. Explain the location, principal structural features, and functions of each component organ of the nervous system. 5. Describe the principal structural features and functions of each component organ of the renal system. 6. Describe the mechanisms involved in the transmission of pathogenic organisms, including prevention and control strategies to reduce the spread of infection in the healthcare setting.
