Unit Name: Biology of Tropical Islands
Description: This course will cover in-depth chemical, physical and biological processes on tropical islands; island biogeography; conservation of biota on tropical islands; different biomes on tropical islands; speciation, extinction and isolation on tropical islands; human impacts and climate change on tropical islands; and conservation efforts on tropical islands.
Learning Target Outcomes: At the end of this unit students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate extensive detail and critical knowledge of the history of island biogeography and ecological processes on islands. 2. Identity, conceptualize and define specific links between speciation, extinction and biodiversity on tropical islands. 3. Comprehensive understanding of island formation and different ecosystem on tropical islands. 4. Demonstrate extensive understanding of human influence and challenges to preserve unique biodiversity on tropical islands.
