Unit Name: Current Issues in Biodiversity and Conservation
Description: This course will cover in detail the effects of climate change on flora and fauna in particular ecosystems. Detailed discussions on human activity and global threats to biodiversity are other important topics of the course. Students will explore various ways of ensuring the sustainable development of resources and how to maintain biodiversity.
Learning Target Outcomes: At the end of this unit students will be able to: 1. Assess the effects of environmental change on global biodiversity. 2. Assess human activities as threats to Earth’s biodiversity of flora and fauna. 3. Discuss methods of species conservation focusing on population size, genetic diversity and critical habitats. 4. Prepare landscape and regional conservation aims. 5. Apply ecological principles to restore degraded ecosystems. 6. Assess various ways of sustainable development to improve human welfare while simultaneously conserving diversity.
