Unit Code: BIO825

Unit Name: Advanced Microbiology

Description: Advanced microbiology course is very appropriate and offers great potential for developing new and innovative approaches and strategies for applications of potentially useful microbes and managing harmful microbes to protect the human and plant environment.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe and discuss morphology, metabolism, reproduction (life cycle), genetics and ecology of microbial communities. 2. Use a wide range of skills to differentiate among useful bacterial and fungal strains which cause animal and plant diseases and/or anatomic syndromes. 3. Apply standard microbiological laboratory techniques for the identification and isolation of microbial strains. 4. Evaluate the importance of environmental and industrial microbes and their uses. 5. Analyse the impact of microbes on the ecosystems, the environment and industrial based processes. 6. Use a range of routine skills to utilize genetically engineered bacterial and fungal strains to control pollution, bioremediation and protect the environment.
