Unit Code: BCH502

Unit Name: Basic Biochemistry

Description: Basic concepts in biochemistry. It includes biochemical molecules, protein structure and function, membranes, metabolism, and regulation of biosynthesis. This course provides students with basic essentials of modern biochemistry and the background needed for upper-division biology courses. The knowledge attained from this course forms the basis which builds the foundation towards the understanding and application of other biochemistry courses to be taken in year II and III of the program.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge of biochemistry and explain the major complex biomolecules of the cell. • Distinguish between the chemical structure, classification and functions of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. • Distinguish the classification & function of nucleic acids and enzymes. • Demonstrate the knowledge of the biochemical structure of vitamins, its classification and the functions of vitamins and minerals. • Distinguish between the various hormones, its action and function. • Analyse acids and bases, the mechanism of homeostasis and acid base balance other biochemical processes
