Description: The unit covers historical development and modern concept of animal breeding, terminologies in farm animal breeding, record keeping and standardization of herd recording, breeds of livestock and major traits in farm animals, application of mendelian Inheritance to animal breeding, nature of gene action and inheritance, heredity and environment interaction, population genetics and genetic improvement, Selection between and within breeds, principles and methods of selection to breeding, genetic parameters: heritability, repeatability, and correlation among traits, mating/breeding methods, crossbreeding systems and hybrid vigour.
