Unit Name: Pig and Poultry Production

Description: The units covers brief history of poultry and pig production in pacific island countries, pig production systems in the pacific region vertical integration system of pig production, breeds of pigs, types of housing systems and equipment, principles of building piggery, plan and layout of piggery, record keeping in piggery, feeding methods, selection of breeding stock, breeding season and prepare gilts and sows for mating, mating methods, pig production system to market, management from weaning to market, selection of chicken and ducks breeds for meat and egg production, poultry breeds available in Fiji, preparation of brooding house for chickens, management of chicks from day old to eight weeks of age, management of growers, loor space requirements for growing laying birds under different types of housing system, routine daily management of chicks and ducklings, management of laying stock and record keeping, management of breeder flock or parent stock for fertile egg production.
