Unit Name: Animal Health and Management

Description: The syllabus covers manifestation of diseases, their signs and recognition: skin and body conditions; history and physical examination of animals; recording history of diseased animal, procedures of taking history in relation to sickness of animal, procedures and importance of physical examination: inspection and recording of temperature, respiration, pulse / heart rate, ruminal motility first aids, pre - and postoperative care and management of farm animals.Familiarization with common equipments, their usesand care, sterilization, disinfections,. Types of wounds,wound managements and care.Procedures of collections of various body fluids i.e. blood, urine, faecal, etc. Preliminary management of abscess, cyst, sinus / fistula, necrosis, gangrene, burns, sprain / strain. Introduction to common diseases of farm animals.Methods of drug administrations. Assistance in common routine surgical interventions i.e.Closed castaration, Debudding, tipping and dehorning, Hoof trimming, shearing, Intramammary therapy, Ear notching, needle teeth clipping etc. Procedures of wound dressing and bandaging. Hoof care of farm animals. Common affections / diseases of udder and teats of farm animals.Care and feeding of calves.Introduction to common veterinary medicine their use and storage, introduction to vaccines and vaccination procedures in animals
