Unit Code: APS602
Unit Name: The Evolution of Fiji as a Multiracial Nation
Description: Through the careful examination of the ideas of the early and prominent leaders of Fiji (Ayodha Prasad, Dr Manilal, Ravuama Vunivalu, Ratu Sukuna, Ratu Mara, A.D Patel and S.M. Koya), this unit traces the paradigm shifts in the ideologies of these leaders in line with the emergence of Fiji as a multi-racial society. The Unit critically explores the thinking and vision of these leaders as Fiji emerges from a racially divided colonial society to independence in 1970 and after. It also examines the challenges and the controversies that underline the slow emergence of Fiji as a full-fledged multi-racial society in search of a national identity. These challenges and their resolutions, as Fiji grows, are traced to the ideas of these leaders of the two major ethnic groups and their strident efforts towards moving Fiji away from its colonial situation to an independent state with its own identity. The perennial issues of land, race, and political representation, including the prevailing ideologies of development, will be examined from the perspective of these leaders as expressed in their speeches, political ideas and political party manifestos.
