Unit Name: Introduction to Animal Science

Description: A preliminary course that introduces the student to the discipline and science of animal production. Students will be introduced to the role of animals in society, the sub-disciplines of animal science, the industries, types and breeds of farm animals, an overview of the production of different animals and range of animal products. Animal health care and recent/on-going changes in animal production are also highlighted.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Categorise the different animal kingdoms 2. Specify domestication of animals and different classes of animals 3. Analyse and discuss the different feeding methods for animal species 4. Analyse and discuss the influences of climate and economic factors on farm animal production
