Unit Name: Animal Nutritional Biochemistry

Description: Biochemistry of carbohydrates, lipids, ammino acids, proteins and nucleic acids. Enzymes, EC numbering, classification and inhibition. Carbohydrate metabolism: glycolysis; introduction, reactions of,energetics of; fate of pyruvate. Kreb?s cycle; introduction, reactions, energetics of TCA cycle. Amphibolic pathway, HMP shunt. Gluconeogenesis, cori cycle, glycogenesis, glycogenolysis, regulation of blood sugar. Bioenergetics of carbohydrate metabolism. Carbohydrate metabolism in ruminants. Lipid metabolism: Beta oxidation of saturated, unsaturated and branched chain fatty acids, energetics of beta oxidation, ketone body formation (ketogenesis) and utilization. Ketosis. Biosynthesis of fatty acids, triacylglycerol, phospholipids & lipoproteinmetabolism. Bioenergetics of lipid metabolism, protein metabolism: biosynthesis and degradation. Protein metabolism in ruminants. Degradation of amino acids, deamination, transamination and decarboxylation of amino acids. Ammonia production and transport. Urea synthesis.
