Unit Name: Anaesthesia IV

Description: This final year of MMed following the successful completion of examinations, is aimed at equipping the candidate with additional useful skills and knowledge for daily practice in peri-operative medicine, Anaesthesia & Intensive Care. The candidate is expected to work as a senior registrar or junior consultant building on previous knowledge. The course is based within the hospital with practical skills attainment and supervision with in the hospital and some attendance and teaching at short course workshops and conferences.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Display appropriate judgment and expertise in the preparation and management of patients undergoing anaesthesia ASA 1-5 and complex procedures relevant to the Pacific. 2. Display appropriate judgment and expertise in the postoperative management of patients including the management of acute pain. 3. Establish and maintain quality assurance, and respond to needs and organize changes required to meet professional standards. 4. Take responsibility as a manager and leader within the hospital environment. 5. Conduct, supervise and teach the emergency and ongoing daily management of severe trauma and critically ill patients. 6. Utilise and coordinate health resources appropriately. 7. Maintain personal professional standards with continuing education, meetings and refresher courses. 8. Teach and supervise trainees and undergraduates in anaesthetic skills.
