Unit Name: Anaesthesia II

Description: The purpose of the Masters Anaesthesia programme is to build on the knowledge and skills in the Basic Sciences, Pharmacology and Practical conduct on Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to enable to candidates to practice with in the pacific with higher risk patients and challenging patients and surgery. MMed 1 and 2 yrs are a two year curriculum building on the Diploma base line, aiming to acquire a knowledge & skills in peri-operative medicine, Anaesthesia & Intensive Care to practice as a specialist in Anaesthesia in the pacific. The course is based on the problem based learning (PBL) method of teaching and practical skills attainment and supervision with in the hospital.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Display appropriate judgment and expertise in the preparation and management of patients undergoing Anaesthesia. Able to care independently for AS1-2 patients and appropriately seeking guidance for sicker patients or more complex procedures. 2. Display appropriate judgment and expertise in the postoperative management of patients including the management of acute pain seeking guidance for sicker patients or more complex cases. 3. Begin to actively run and participate in quality assurance, and respond to needs and organize changes required to meet professional standards. 4. Start to take responsibility as a manager and leader within the hospital environment. 5. Conduct the emergency and ongoing daily management of severe trauma and critically ill patients. Some limited critical care supervision and teaching of junior colleagues. 6. Learn to Utilize and coordinate health resources appropriately. 7. Maintain personal professional standards by taking a role in departmental continuing education, meetings and refresher courses. 8. Start to teach and supervise trainees and undergraduates in anaesthetic skills.
