Unit Name: Anaesthesia I

Description: graduate competent in the perioperative anaesthetic management of common surgical procedures and in the early management of severe trauma. Like so much in education the more you put into the work the more you will receive in return. The course material provided will give you some insights into the subject areas and provide enough background for the topics to be discussed and developed during the time in the tutorial sessions. We encourage participants to provide the staff with feedback on areas perceived as strengths and weaknesses in the course. This will allow us to fine tune teaching during the year and make modifications in subsequent years. This course should equip you with the knowledge and practical skills required for your professional career in anaesthesia, taking place in an effective learning environment that you will hopefully find stimulating and rewarding.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of anaesthesiology and competence in required skills in the management of common preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative anaesthetic practices and the management of severe trauma. 2. Evaluate and manage patients relevant to aspects of General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Intensive Care and Pain Management as a Pacific Island’s non- specialist anaesthetist basic trainee. 3. Demonstrate competence in skills to act appropriately as a member or leader of a therapeutic team, to contribute to the education of nursing, paramedical and medical staff, and to conduct clinical audits and quality assurance activities in their clinical practices. 4. Demonstrate commitment to self-directed learning and other forms of continuing education in anaesthesia, to adapt to changes in anaesthesia practice relevant to safer management of patients, and where possible, being mindful of safety issues, to maximize effective use of limited resources.
