Unit Code: AGB605

Unit Name: Animal Breeding and Genetics

Description: The course focuses on topics such as selection and systems of breeding livestock, heritability and traits of economic importance, and genetic and statistical principles as they apply to farm animals. The application of the animal breeding techniques will lead to the improvement of animal breeds, which will consequently increase profits of farms. Other topics discussed in the course are the interaction between genes and the environment on some traits in livestock, and designing of livestock breeding programmes. \"

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1.2.1 Apply simple and complex inheritance concepts. 1.2.2 Evaluate the mating systems related to the production and conservation of animal breeds. 1.2.3 Make selection decisions based on the morphometric structure of animal breeds. 1.2.4 Evaluate the principles of estimating breeding value. 1.2.5 Design livestock breeding programs. 1.2.6 Identify the available biotechnologies with current and potential application in genetic improvement of animals
