Unit Name: Agriculture Development in Fiji

Description: This unit examines the status of food and agriculture and the international rules and organizations that have emerged to govern the increasingly global system of food and agriculture. Specific themes to be covered include governance issues related to the rise of global food corporations, agricultural trade liberalization and the WTO, food aid distribution, international agricultural assistance, the global agro-chemical industry, and agricultural biotechnology.Agriculture sector is often seen as the catalyst of development of most economies at the early stage. In this unit, we aim to introduce the sector to the students. We will provide an overview of the sector, the composition of the sector, the growth potential and identify the impediments and challenges that lie ahead. Students will also be taught on the importance of this sector relative to the other sector and linkages of this sector with the rest of the economy.
