| Programme Description | The PGDPSY programme was conceived in response to the need for first-line practitioners capable of identifying mental health disorders among individuals in the community and to provide Fiji and the Pacific region with doctors trained in basic mental health practice. The aim of the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychiatry programme is to: • Educate and up-skill qualified doctors (MBBS or equivalent) in the area of mental health/psychiatry. • Develop the skills and knowledge to competently manage t h e common c a u s e s of morbidity and mortality of patients in mental health. • Be able to competently identify more complex diseases and refer the patient for psychiatric specialist’s care. • Provide an opportunity to proceed to a specialist qualification Master of Medicine in Psychiatry |

| Minimum Requirement | 1. MBBS degree or equivalent. 2. Successful completion of medical internship. 3. It is preferable that candidates for the PGDPSY have some experience in psychiatry or a supervisor’s recommendation to join the programme. 4. Applicants should be registered with the Fiji Medical Council (FMC) prior to the commencement of the academic year. 5. Applicants should be a citizen of a Pacific Island country; outside applicants may be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the HOS in consultation with discipline/unit head and the PGAC. |
