Programme Name Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Medicine
Programme Description
The Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Medicine at the FNU College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS) is a one-year full time programme (depending on academic merit and/or requirements, the diploma programme also enables progression to Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine programme). Internal Medicine is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and non-surgical management of diseases of the internal organs of the body in adults. Specialists in Internal Medicine are often referred to as physicians, and in addition to undertaking general clinical care of patients, often undertake diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, which do not entail surgery and anaesthesia.
Internal Medicine is often subdivided into various subspecialty fields, usually centred on the major organ systems. These include, for example, subspecialties such as Cardiology (diseases of the cardiovascular system), Gastroenterology (diseases of the liver and digestive system), Neurology (diseases of the brain and nervous system), and Nephrology (diseases of the kidneys).
ONLY for students who graduated with their FNU MBBS awards prior to 2004 and candidates wishing to pursue PGDIMD but are graduates from other universities/institutions (non-FNU graduate), an additional course PBH803 – Pacific Public Health is an integral part of their curriculum that they must successfully complete. FNU candidates who have graduated with MBBS from 2004 onwards have studied learning outcomes and topics that are relevant to/with PBH803– hence the recognition of their prior learning in those topics. This is a common core course across the School of Medical Sciences, Postgraduate Diploma programmes and can be taken on-site or as a Distant Flexible Learning unit as unclassified prior to joining the PGDIMD programme.
