After hearing of the Fiji National University’s (FNU) Enrolment Roadshow in Sigatoka while playing rugby at a local village, Sanaila Vivara made his way to the FNU booth to enrol himself into a free short course.

The 21-year-old was eager to begin studies in the Automotive Light Engineering Repair programme offered at the College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST).

“I heard about FNU’s Reskilling and Upskilling initiative while I was playing rugby, so I knew I had to visit the FNU booth to find out more,” he said.

The former Suva Grammar School student said that the COVID-19 pandemic made him realise the importance of having a secure future to be able to provide for his family.

“My family and I faced a lot of difficulties during the pandemic, and my parents advised us that we must work hard to complete our studies and be employed for a better future,” Vivara said.

From Tubairata Village in Nadroga, Vivara said he will be the first in his family to attend FNU.

“In our village, there are a lot of light vehicles and machinery, and when things are damaged, it is costly to repair them. So, I want to learn this trade and gain further skills to assist my community.”

“I have noticed that FNU provides a lot of options for students to choose from in short courses, TVET and higher education studies.”

There are four free short courses offered by the College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST) – Automotive Light Machinery Repair, Diagnose and Repair Automotive, Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditions (AHVAC), Engineering Project Management and Data Communication and Networking.

The CEST free short courses applications will close on Monday, 30 January 2023.

To qualify for the Free Reskilling and Upskilling courses at FNU, prospective students have to complete an application form and submit it to FNU with the following documents: a self-declaration of unemployment, Valid Photo ID, TIN Details and Birth Certificate.
