The Fiji National University (FNU) has a programme for everyone. This rang true for 17-year-old Arthur Vasu of Nasauvuki, Moturiki in Lomaiviti who enrolled in the Certificate in Carpentry (Level 3) during the University’s roadshow campaign in Ba.

Vasu dropped out of school after completing Year 10 and began shadowing his father, who is a carpenter. He soon took an interest and his curiosity in carpentry grew.

With his parent’s guidance and advice, he found himself at the Ba roadshow to enrol.

“I dropped out of school in 2021 and began shadowing my dad, who is a carpenter, to all his work sites. I started assisting him in the little things. The more I followed him, the more skills I developed, and my interest in carpentry grew,” said Vasu.

“My dad advised me to look into study opportunities that will enhance my skills, which is why I am here today. Moreover, as the youngest and only one living with my parents, I have an obligation to look after my parents.”

“I aim to complete my studies, enhance my carpentry skills, and like my father, lead carpentry projects. My next plan is to build my own house.”

Vasu’s mother, Mere Adi accompanied him to the roadshow and was overjoyed that her son secured an opportunity to study at FNU despite dropping out of school.

“Like all parents, we want to see our children succeed in life and that is my wish for Arthur. Arthur’s story should inspire school dropouts that there is always a second chance and that dropping out of school is not the end.”

“I am glad that he took his father’s advice and will soon pursue his studies in carpentry.”

“I would also like to advise parents to never give up on their children. I encourage all parents of high school dropouts to visit the FNU booth and seek academic counselling for their children.”

FNU’s Certificate in Carpentry (Level 3) is offered at the Samabula, Ba and Labasa campuses.
