Together towards tomorrow

In a professional development workshop held at the Pearl Resort from 24-26 October, Pro Vice Chancellor Learning & Teaching Professor Pounder emphasised how important it was for students to feel a sense of belonging to the institution. He stated that, “good teachers who cared about students had a life changing effect”, and that experiential learning and excellent teachers were strong determinants of engagement. He based these statements off the Gallup Purdue Survey of 30,000 graduates in the USA as a means for contexualising the workshop. “Together towards tomorrow” was the theme of the workshop and the programme focused on the learning and teaching portfolios of the five Colleges, the roles of the Planning, and Quality Offices and the functions of the Library. As the newly installed Pro VC, it was a good opportunity for Professor Pounder and the team to understand the inner workings of the learning and teaching portfolio at FNU. Dr. Hazelman, Associate Dean Flexible & E-Learning presented a session on FNU’s agenda for flexible learning and the blended mode as a means for extending FNU’s access to students from around Fiji and the region. The workshop was attended by the Associate Deans Learning & Teaching from the Colleges, key members from the Planning, and Quality Offices, the Acting University Librarian and Associate Dean for Learning & Teaching Enhancement.
