Growing up, Roma Ranita Singh loved watching documentaries and television programmes relating to border security and international trade, which strengthened her aspirations to enrol in the Trade Diploma in Customs offered by the Fiji National University (FNU).

The Ba native said she always desired to contribute to national development objectives as customs administrators play a pivotal role in implementing critical government policies and providing border protection.

The two-year programme offered through FNU’s College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies (CBHTS) has prepared Singh with understanding and knowledge in customs and border management.

“FNU has trained me well to venture into the administration, customs law and trade facilitation field and contribute to the national development policies. The programme has provided me with a deeper understanding of customs operations and important abilities required to handle customs clearance and freight operations,” said Singh.

“I have gained advanced knowledge and technical skills in current aspect of international laws and administration to effectively apply policies and procedures in industry focused on cross-border trade.”

Singh adds that she has become familiar with the roles and responsibilities required in essential customs related areas such as enforcement techniques and procedures.

“I now have a better understanding of international conventions and agreements, risk management, the global movement of people, craft and cargo. The programme has enhanced my communications and critical thinking aspect, which employers are looking for in today’s evolving job market,” she commented.

Singh said she always wanted to study at FNU because of better career prospects and that the programme was offered at Namaka Campus, Nadi.

“It was convenient for me to travel from Ba to Nadi instead of renting in Suva. I always knew from an early age that I want to work in the customs field. I chose a vocational course, trade diploma in customs programme at FNU, as I had the opportunity to undertake industrial attachments that gave me hands-on experience in my future career and enabled me to build a network of industry contacts.”
