Science enthusiast enjoys teaching career

The desire to become an educator specialising in teaching science subjects was the key factor that influenced Deepti Darshani Devi to opt for the Chemistry programme at the Fiji National University (FNU).

Devi, who teaches Mathematics and Chemistry at Nukuloa College in Ba, highlighted that she often carried out simple experiments at home to fulfil her curiosity.

“I have always had a strong interest in investigating and testing things. As I grew older, my inquisitiveness about science increased. Therefore, I decided to study science at FNU,” she said.

“While I wanted to increase my knowledge in the field of science, it occurred to me that I could impart my skills and understanding to others by becoming a teacher and as a result, I completed Post Graduate Certificate in Education and started teaching.”

To further enhance her skills and knowledge, Devi enrolled in Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry programme, which is offered by FNU’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST).

“With the current pandemic altering the nature of many careers and work environments, I strongly believe it is very important to continue to upskill yourself to remain relevant in your profession. It will also help you understand the new trends and advancements in your careers,” said Devi.

“Studying Chemistry will allow you to choose from a wide variety of useful, interesting and rewarding careers in the areas of food, clothing, shelter, health, energy, water and soil.”

“I have been teaching Chemistry for Years 11, 12 and 13. It is an incredibly fascinating field of study as it plays a role in everyone’s lives and touches almost every aspect of our existence in some way. Chemistry is often referred to as the central science because it joins together physics and mathematics, biology and medicine and the earth and environmental sciences.”

She is proud to be able to mould students and help them achieve their dreams, whilst continuing to work towards fulfilling hers.

“In the teaching profession, every day is different, where not only the students learn but teachers also learn new skills all the time, hence, there is never a dull moment.  We can watch students grow, which also makes us proud.”

Devi enjoyed attending face-to-face classes when there were no public health restrictions, but she says the online mode of learning has been easier and more convenient.

“Remote learning saves my travelling time, which I’m now able to spend with my son and family as a whole. However, since it’s a science programme, the only drawback is the experimental components that cannot be done virtually.”

“I am keeping up with the studies via zoom classes, emails, reading lecture notes, doing tutorials and liaising with the course coordinators as per need. I enjoy the student life at FNU due to the approachable nature of staff as well as the availability of resources. Even during this pandemic, services such as accessing research materials from the website have been made so easy by the assistance of the library staff,” Devi added.

Interested students can apply online by visiting the FNU website www.fnu.ac.fj or text via 857 or email admission@fnu.ac.fj if they face difficulties completing the process online or need further information regarding enrolment for Semester II.
