Alumita Salobo

Alumita Saukuru Salobo is on a mission to complete her studies at the Fiji National University (FNU) and accomplish a promise she made to her father, Anasa Salobo, before his passing.

Salobo, originally from Savudrodro in Savusavu, is currently pursuing a double major, Bachelor of Commerce in Management and Law, from the FNU’s College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies (CBHTS).

“My father has been my biggest motivation as he always encouraged me to work hard to get a successful career. The only way to have a successful career was through education because my father always believed that knowledge is power,” Salobo said.

“Losing him is not easy, especially when I am working hard with complete dedication and commitment to fulfil his and my family’s dream of becoming a lawyer.”

“I am sure he will be happy to see my achievement from the heavens. I have to leave my family back in Savusavu to come to Suva to pursue my studies at the Fiji National University. I miss them, but I always remind myself that I have a mission to accomplish, and this gives me extra motivation to complete my studies. I am currently staying at the FNU hostel and am satisfied with the facilities and study environment provided to me.”

The 20-year-old wants to become a voice for the majority of women who are going through violence by their partners in the future.

“I want to become a voice for the voiceless women in our communities who are the victims of domestic violence.”

“This is a serious issue in Fiji as we always hear of frightening domestic violence cases. So, I am hoping that after my studies, I will be able to help all women get a justice who are the victims of domestic violence,” she mentioned.

“Women play a key role everywhere, whether in a community, at home in household chores, or at the national level in making decisions for the country.”

“Every individual has the right to live with dignity and should not be subject to physical or mental torture. Once I graduate from FNU, I hope to educate and raise awareness about human rights.”

Salobo said each day is different from the previous day, and one should not be discouraged if they have experienced a bad day.

“My message to the young students is not to give up on their lives and to continue working hard. Even a small duty can help you learn and experience things that will matter in your career.”
