Press On Toward The Goal – Soronaivalu

Posted On: December 12, 2023

“Set goals, maintain focus on them, and connect with the right people who can significantly impact your personal and professional growth.”

These were sentiments made by Fiji National University, Diploma in Construction (Level 6) graduand, Seveti Soronaivalu as he collected his graduation gown from the FNU’s Nasinu Campus recently.

Soronaivalu, who is currently employed as a Technician at the China Railway First Group Fiji, toiled through life’s adversities, including losing both parents during the course of his studies.

His determination to pursue his goals despite facing such profound loss and challenges speaks volumes of his strength, resilience, and dedication.

“I had a goal, a purpose, and was determined to achieve them. Losing both my parents during the course of my studies pushed me even further to achieve this Diploma as a tribute to them,” he said.

“There were times I had to skip meals because we could not afford them, other times I had to walk to FNU campus for classes because I did not have enough bus fare. There were times I would just say I’ve had a hearty meal just to save whatever we can for necessities at home.”

“I kept seeing this picture in my head that I was going to graduate. I pressed on toward my goal, despite the challenges, not once did I fail any of my courses, and successfully completed my studies.”

“We have families back at home, in the village, who look up to us. When you achieve what you set out to do, you set the bar for them, you become a beacon of hope for them.”

He added that having a supportive network of individuals could make a tremendous difference, particularly during tough times.

“I joined the Christian Fellowship at FNU and this was a group that motivated me when I was at my lowest. It is important to surround yourself with the right people who will help through tough times and help push you towards your goals.”

Soronaivalu will be joined by his sister on graduation day (December 14), who is graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce (Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management and Management).

The upcoming graduation ceremony on December 14 will undoubtedly be a poignant yet proud moment for Soronaivalu and his sister, marking a significant milestone in their lives while honoring their parents’ legacy.

Their achievement stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for their families, community, and anyone facing adversity in pursuing their dreams.
