Living with low vision was not a barrier to Rishaal Ravikesh Prasad completing his studies and graduating from the Fiji National University (FNU) Technical College of Fiji in the presence of proud family members.

Prasad was one of 353 FNU TCF graduates who collected their certificates from Nasinu Campus this week, as COVID-19 restrictions halted traditional ceremonies last year.

The 18-year-old graduated with a Certificate II in Automotive Mechanic and said whilst he was happy to reminisce on his technical studies, he was more excited for the opportunities and challenges that laid ahead.

“I am glad that I chose TCF as it was suited to my field of interest and I have many memories from my time at the college, becoming friends with people of various backgrounds and having passionate lecturers,” Prasad said.

“The lecturers were always ready to help me given my low vision condition and they did not see this as a barrier to my education. Some people may have thought the odds were against me, but I have managed to overcome that and succeed in my studies.”

“I am proud to receive my certificate of qualification and after completing studies at TCF I have also gained confidence in myself and public speaking.”

“FNU has developed my capability to think outside the box, be critical and most importantly, has taught me to be independent.”

Prasad said he chose this course due to his interest in vehicles and the industry demand for workers in this field given the number of vehicles in the country.

The one-year course covered topics such as light motor vehicle components and system, automotive tools and equipment, introduction to wheel alignment for light motor vehicles, automotive electrical circuit, battery and lighting system, motor vehicle safe motoring requirements and periodic maintenance check and services on light motor vehicles. Students also undergo a compulsory industrial attachment component to provide them with practical skills in automotive engineering.

Prasad said he was keeping his options open and hopes to continue his education at FNU’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST) in the future.
