The Fiji National University (FNU) welcomed its newest cohort of postgraduate students at the 2026 Graduate Studies Induction in collaboration with the FNU Students Association (FNUSA), highlighting the critical role of research in advancing the institution.
The Cohort consists of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Education and master’s students.
The Doctor of Education aims to provide a pathway to Doctoral Study for students with a master’s degree in education by Coursework.
Delivering the keynote address, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Paul Iji, underscored the importance of research students in driving research output.
Reflecting on his own experience at the University of Adelaide, he recalled a defining moment when a senior leader described postgraduate students as “the people we respect.”
“We assumed he meant our supervisors,” Professor Iji said.
“But he clarified he meant us, the postgraduate students.”
He emphasised that this perspective remains relevant today, noting that postgraduate students are central to research productivity.
Professor Iji encouraged students to recognise their value and see their degrees as the beginning of a lifelong journey.
“Your qualification is not the end goal—it is the starting point. What matters is how you apply your skills beyond graduation,” he said.
Acting Dean, Centre for Graduate Studies, Associate Professor Dr Mumtaz Alam held a general discussion and overview of FNU Graduate Studies Programme, FNU Graduate Studies Policies and Procedures and Operations of the Centre for Graduate Studies.
University Librarian, Dr. Udya Shukla, also addressed the students, outlining the essential support provided by the University Library.
He emphasised the importance of academic writing and proper referencing, encouraging students to seek guidance on developing bibliographies and maintaining academic integrity.
Dr. Shukla highlighted key library services, including access to online databases, scholarly journals, and research tools, as well as workshops and one-on-one support. He noted that library staff are available to assist students at every stage—from literature reviews to thesis completion.
“The library is your partner in research,” he said.
“We are here to guide and support you throughout your academic journey.”
The induction provided students with valuable insights and resources, reinforcing their role in strengthening FNU’s research culture and contributing to national and global knowledge.
FNUSA President Dr. Mohammed Iqbal encouraged the students to be a keen listener and utilise your time effectively.
“Talk to your supervisors. Go to them and don’t expect them to come to you,” Dr. Iqbal said.
Dr. Iqbal also acknowledge the Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba and Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor Corporate Services Professor Nii-K Plange for their continuous support.
