Two staff from Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF) have been recognised for their exemplary leadership and excellent work ethic.

Dr Archibold Bakare, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Animal Science, was awarded the ‘Best Academic Staff of the Year’ while Vinita Prasad, Livestock Farm Assistant,  was recognised with the ‘Best Support Staff of the Year’ award.

Dr Bakare and Prasad, both received their awards during the CAFF Annual Awards night in Suva. Both winners said the award came as a surprise.

“I believe a lot of people deserved the award. Nevertheless, I trust everyone is a winner, and I thank my colleagues for hoisting me up,” said Dr Bakare, whose award acknowledges his drive to improve education, training and his support to the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Dr Bakare joined FNU three years ago. He has played an instrumental role at the Department of Animal Science at CAFF ever since.

“There are no Demi-Gods in this world. Everyone is equal and have opportunities to reach greater heights. However, it takes dedication and determination to keep your dreams alive,” he mentioned.

Dr Bakare studied Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Animal Science) at the University of Zimbabwe before completing his Masters in Animal Science from the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The senior academic has encouraged the students to never give up despite the circumstances. Professionally, he hopes to do more research to improve the lives of impoverished communities.

Vinita Prasad, who works as a Livestock Farm Assistant said working in a male-dominated field comes with its challenges, however, the enthusiasm to keep doing better and the zeal to be the best in what you do, is what led her to win the award.

“All the nominees for this award is a winner. I’m thankful to all the people that supported me. I’m humbled to win. This is indeed a great honour,” Prasad said.

“I keep pushing myself into achieving more. Being the only female at the farm, I always remind myself that I am unique.”

Prasad, who is currently completing her Bachelors in Agriculture programme at FNU, believes education opens doors to greater opportunities. She encouraged everyone to strive for excellence.
