Lohit’s passion for Forestry led him to study at FNU

Press Release Posted On: January 4, 2022

Working for the Ministry of Forestry proved to be a perfect career start for Lawrence Lohit, a first-year Bachelor of Science in Forestry student at the Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF).

Lohit works as a Technical Assistant at the Ministry’s Research and Development unit and believes that his role is aligned with his passion for forestry.

“After I secured employment with the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, I realised that I needed to learn about the technical expertise and research skills in the area of forest management and biodiversity conservation.  This led me to enrol in the Bachelor of Science in Forestry programme at FNU,” shared Lohit.

The 24-year-old is responsible for forest operations, assessment, planning and research.

“This programme has also taught me about climate change adaptation and mitigation, forest health and protection, agroforestry and land use, non-timber forest products and value-adding and forest business and entrepreneurship.”

The former Suva Sangam High School student stated that selecting FNU was never a tough decision.

“FNU was definitely an ideal choice for me as no other University in Fiji offered programmes specialised in forestry.”

The CAFF student highlighted that managing demanding study schedules has helped him juggle competing priorities as a full-time employee.

He also relishes hearing from practitioners in the “real world” during his lecture classes.

Lohit added that FNU has the best atmosphere and the environment is very supportive.  He stated he would happily recommend Fiji National University’s (FNU) Bachelor of Science in Forestry programme to anyone keen to pursue a successful career in forestry.

“The lecturers at FNU have such valuable insights to offer, and the more effort you put into the programme, the more you will get out of it.”
