Epeli Lewalewa is an inspiration to those facing challenges.

Driven by a desire to elevate his family and inspire the youth of Lovoni, Lewalewa sets his sights on completing his studies, securing a career in land surveying, and improving his family’s circumstances.

From Vatukalo Village in Lovoni in Ovalau, Lewalewa began his journey at Fiji National University (FNU) in 2013, pursuing a Diploma in Land Surveying (Level 6).

When faced with difficulties and financial constraints, he temporarily put his studies on hold and returned to his village.

“Life is challenging, especially in a village setting,” Lewalewa acknowledged.

“With two children now, my priority is to improve our living standards, provide for my family, and set a positive example for my children and our youth.”

Back at his village, Lewalewa took on the role of District Youth Coordinator, actively seeking solutions for the betterment of his community’s youth.

FNU representatives met Lewalewa at the Lomaiviti Provincial Council meeting, where he was a delegate.

The Lomaiviti Provincial Council meeting is an annual event that brings together village, district and provincial representatives of Lomaiviti, stakeholders and government ministries to discuss pressing development issues affecting these communities.

FNU’s outreach team attended the three – day meeting at the Yatu Lau Hotel to raise awareness on its services and programmes.

Lewalewa, seeking both to voice the concerns of his district’s youth and explore solutions, approached the FNU booth, particularly interested in community-based educational opportunities. He also inquired about completing his diploma, with only four units remaining.

Despite these challenges, Lewalewa’s resolve to complete his education remained strong.

“Do not let your circumstances dictate your dreams,” he said with encouragement.

“Embrace the challenges, but never stop working towards your aspirations, even when the situation seems impossible.”

FNU’s Senior Outreach Specialist, Vijayta Sharma highlighted the significance of FNU’s presence at such meetings in bringing FNU’s services closer to the people of Fiji.

She added that the FNU outreach team will be present at the upcoming provincial meetings for Lau and Namosi and will be offering academic counselling, enrolments, and instant offer letters for Semester 2 applications.
